FANS are made, not born...

Families and Neighbors Support Island Rec (FANS) is a nonprofit organization in beautiful San Juan Island, Washington.

Our mission: to enhance park and recreation facilities and programs for San Juan Island residents by promoting goodwill and broadening the funding base of San Juan Island Park and Recreation District (Island Rec).

A group of islanders began meeting in April 2011 to form a nonprofit organization that helps fill the gap between the community’s park and recreation needs and what Island Rec’s budget can afford to address.  (As a junior taxing district, Island Rec has limited funding resources.)  A board of directors was formed, Articles of Incorporation were developed, a business license was obtained, and in February 2012, FANS received its nonprofit status from the federal government.
